English-style Hot Cross buns


Today it is Easter Sunday, and after making Easter eggs Good Friday, we will be baking English-style Hot Cross Buns today. I have located this recipe in a Danish magazine some years, and I have no idea, if they identical to Hot Cross buns made in England.

English-style Cross Buns: 10-12 buns

  • 500 g wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 25 g yeast
  • 300 g warm milk
  • 50 g butter - melted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 75 g currants or raisins
  • 50 g candied orange peel
  • 2 tablespoon boiling water
  • 50 g sugar
  1. Mix 200 g wheat flour, sugar, yeast and milk together. Let the mix rest for 30 minutes on the kitchen table.
  2. Stir the melted butter and egg into the dough.
  3. Add the salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, currants/raisins and candied orange peel into the dough. Add the rest of the wheat flour into dough. Knead the dough, until it is soft and smooth.
  4. Divided the dough into 10-12 pieces. Place the dough on a baking tray covered with baking paper.'
  5. Cover the dough with a tea towel, and let the buns raises for approx 1 hours.
  6. Heat the oven (conventional) oven t0 200'C.
  7. Cur a cross into each bun.
  8. Bake the buns at 200'C for approx 20 minutes in the upper part of the oven.
  9. Mix the boiling water and sugar together. Glaze the baked buns, while they are still warm with this sugar water.
